Big news from the barn! Three new rescue horses are settling in — introductions coming soon

Things to Do on South Padre Island in October When the Crowds Clear Out

Something shifts on this island in October. You notice it first on Padre Boulevard, where the summer traffic seems to evaporate over a couple of weeks. Then at the beach accesses. Plenty of parking now.

Nobody told the water. It stays warm enough to swim for most of the month, while the air finally drops out of that heavy August range where stepping outside at noon feels like opening an oven door and leaning in for a closer look. If your only picture of South Padre comes from July, October is going to surprise you. For a lot of visitors it’s the best month.

So here’s how to spend it.

Just Tell Me What to Do in October

Ride a horse on the beach. That’s the headline. Horseback riding on South Padre Island hits its best stretch in October, when afternoon and sunset rides stop being a heat endurance test and start being the best part of the trip. Our Spectacular Sunset Ride moved to a 5:30 PM start on September 27 to keep pace with the earlier sunsets, which puts you out in the Gulf surf and then across the dunes to the bay side right as the light turns gold over the water.

Want it all in one day? The Bucket List Package pairs a horseback ride with an unlimited zip-line session for $159, with Petting Barn access thrown in. Build the rest of your week around that. Swim in the mornings and eat dinner whenever you feel like it, because nobody’s lining up anymore.

What October Weather Actually Feels Like

Early in the month, daytime highs usually land somewhere in the low to mid 80s. By Halloween a typical afternoon is closer to the upper 70s. Evenings cool off. Not cold, just comfortable enough that a long sleeve shirt stops looking ridiculous.

Humidity is still a coastal fact of life, so don’t expect crisp mountain air. What changes is the sun. It sits lower and sets earlier, and that punishing window between 11 and 3 that governs every summer plan on this island finally loosens its grip on your schedule. You can do things at 2 PM again.

Then there are the cold fronts. Somewhere in the middle or back half of October, the first real front usually pushes through, and when it arrives the wind swings around to the north and the temperature can fall fifteen degrees in a single afternoon. Locals get excited about this. Visitors get caught in shorts. Pack one jacket, even if it feels silly while you’re loading the car in Houston or San Antonio.

Hurricane season officially runs through November, so October isn’t completely off the hook. Most Octobers pass without drama on this stretch of coast. Still, watch the forecast the week before you go. We ride rain or shine when conditions are safe, and if lightning or a serious storm rolls in, our team will contact you and work out rescheduling or other options with you. For same-day weather questions, call (956) 761-4677.

Why the Horses Are the Main Event This Month

Summer riding at South Padre Island Adventure Park is good. It’s also mostly a morning game, since the sand and the sun both get intense by midday. October breaks that wide open.

Early risers still have the Morning Special. It leaves at 10 AM Wednesday through Friday and 9:30 AM on weekends. Still a great pick, too, if you want ninety minutes on the sand while the Gulf is quiet and flat. The 4 PM Beach Ride becomes a genuinely comfortable hour this time of year. And the sunset ride is about as good as riding gets here in fall, because you cross from the surf over the dunes to the remote bay side of the island and watch the sun go down over open water. Wildlife shows up often. Herons, mostly, working the shallows.

October has a full moon, too. This year it falls late on Sunday night, October 25, and our Moonlight Ride runs in the days leading up to and during the full moon. Ninety minutes. Walk-only. Starts at dusk. Space is limited, so if a night ride on the beach is on your list, look at those dates before you lock in a hotel, and read our moonlight ride guide for what the evening is like.

Every ride is open to guests 6 and up who weigh up to 300 pounds. Beginners are welcome. No experience needed. Guides run a short orientation before anyone climbs on, and they stay with the group the whole time. Prices are per rider, which is worth remembering when you’re doing the math for a family of four.

The Rest of the Island in October

Some of the best things to do in South Padre Island this month need no reservation at all. Leave room for them.

Early October is when the Gulf is at its friendliest. Water temperatures still feel close to summer, and without the crowds you can pick a spot and actually hear the surf instead of somebody’s speaker. Late afternoons are ideal for long beach walks, especially north of town where things get quieter still.

It’s migration season as well. Birders come to South Padre on purpose in the fall because the island sits on a major flyway, and monarch butterflies pass through on their long trip to Mexico. You don’t need binoculars. Just look up once in a while.

Anglers like it here too. Ask one about the fall flounder run. Then settle in, because you’ll be there a while.

Food gets easier. Much easier. Summer on the island means waiting, and waiting with hungry kids is its own special kind of vacation. By October most places seat you quickly, and a seafood dinner at 6:30 feels relaxed.

A note if you live in the Valley. Our Rio Grande Valley day trip guide is built for people driving over for a single day, fall weekdays included. This post is mostly for folks coming from farther away and staying a few nights.

A Sample October Weekend

Say you roll in Friday afternoon from somewhere up the road. Check in and walk the beach before dinner, since the light on a clear October evening is worth the effort and you’ll sleep better after the drive anyway.

Saturday is the park day. Book a morning slot on the Bucket List Package, which spreads its activities across several hours with breaks between them, so the park fills most of your day in the best possible way. Work the Petting Barn in wherever there’s a gap, since the animals there are rescues and kids get to hand-feed them. Evening is yours for a swim or a nap.

Sunday can go two ways. Families usually take one more swim and head home by lunch. Couples and anyone without a school night looming should consider the 5:30 PM sunset ride, which is the kind of thing that turns an ordinary weekend into the one you talk about at Thanksgiving.

Coming the weekend of October 25? Swap Sunday’s sunset ride for the Moonlight Ride. Different animal entirely. Worth it.

Planning Around Our October Schedule

One practical thing trips people up. We open at 8:30 AM Wednesday through Sunday and stay closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. A Monday arrival with a Tuesday morning ride in mind simply won’t work, so if your trip starts early in the week, save the park for Wednesday or later.

Weekend mornings fill first. Always. If you have any flexibility at all, a Wednesday or Thursday ride in October is about as uncrowded as this park gets all year, which is a nice thing to be able to say about a beachfront attraction in Texas. We do take walk-ins when guides are available. Booking ahead is still the only way to lock in a specific time.

Kids under six can’t ride the horses, but they won’t be left out. Pony rides for ages 2 through 5 cost $25 for ten minutes in our pony corral, and a parent can walk alongside. Our Petting Barn, which is what most people are after when they search for a South Padre Island petting zoo, costs $10 per person with feed included, no reservation needed, and little ones 2 and under get in free.

Anyone riding the zipline on South Padre Island with us needs to weigh between 60 and 300 pounds, and we weigh everyone on site. Horseback riding and the zip-line both need a signed waiver, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian there in person to sign it. Grandma can’t sign for the grandkids. We get asked that a lot. Our age and weight guide covers every rule in one place.

Is October a Good Time to Visit South Padre Island?

For most people, yes. You get warm water without the crowds, plus evenings you can spend outside without melting, and most South Padre Island attractions are simply easier to enjoy once the summer lines disappear. The trade-off is a little weather uncertainty, from the tail of hurricane season early on and from cold fronts later, along with a few businesses in town trimming their hours once summer ends.

Families with school-age kids will mostly be looking at October weekends, and those are still far calmer than anything in June or July. If you’re traveling without kids or can grab a Wednesday off, October midweek is close to ideal.

So, What’s Worth Booking Before You Go?

The horseback ride, first. It’s the thing with fixed times and limited spots, and everything else on the island this month can happen on a whim. If you want the full day, the Bucket List Package puts a ride and the zip-line on one ticket with morning or afternoon slots to pick from. Every ride and its schedule lives on our horseback riding page, and if you’d rather talk it through with a person, get in touch here or call (956) 761-4677. October is our favorite month out there. Come see why.

Questions People Actually Ask

Is the water still warm enough to swim in October?

Early in the month, easily. It cools as the weeks go on, and right after a strong cold front it can feel brisk for a day or two. Plenty of people swim straight through Halloween anyway.

Do sunset rides still run in October?

Yes, Wednesday through Sunday. The start time moved to 5:30 PM on September 27 and may shift again as the days get shorter, so check it when you book.

What should I pack?

Beach gear plus one real layer. Evenings on horseback feel cooler than evenings on a hotel balcony, and that first front can drop the temperature fast. Our fall riding clothes guide goes into detail.

Is October still hurricane season?

Technically, through November 30. October storms are much less common here than in late summer, but keep an eye on the forecast the week of your trip and call (956) 761-4677 if anything looks iffy.

Are you open Mondays?

No. Mondays and Tuesdays we’re closed.
